Hot smoke tests are an essential part of verifying and adjusting fire safety systems, particularly in stairwells. They should be carried out at the locations identified in the computer simulations - mainly on the basis of AS 4391, the standard for hot smoke testing.
Purpose of the tests
The purpose is to verify that the fire safety systems work as designed. The test reproduces real smoke movement and shows whether, in a fire, smoke will be removed safely and evacuation will remain possible.
Method
The tests require dedicated equipment producing hot, buoyant smoke. We use trays of burning alcohol, which give a stable smoke layer under the ceiling. Mineral oil-based smoke is persistent and can remain in still air for up to 4 hours.
Key points
- smoke flow directions must match the results of the computer simulations
- interaction between systems is checked - fire detection and alarm system, access control
- the sprinkler system and other installations are protected against high temperature
- safety measures are in place: a foam extinguisher and a fire blanket next to the test position
